DS9 - The FallenStar Trek DS9 - The Fallen
Situated at the mouth of the Bajoran wormhole, the space station known as "Deep Space Nine" guards the gateway to the Gamma Quadrant, home of he dreaded Dominion. A mysterious alien species resides in the wormhole. The Bajoran refer to them as the Prophets, and worship them as gods - the wormhole is their Celestial Temple. The Prophets can see into the future as well as they can see into the past, for both are the same to them. They are extraordinarily powerful - and they're not the only ones of their kind. An ancient Bajoran legend tells of another race of wormhole aliens - the Pah-wraiths. They want to return to power and your mission is to prevent that from happening.

In spite of the general decline of interest in things Star Trek, a recent spate of games has generated a lot of buzz. This game, the latest offering, has received very good reviews and may be worth your interest.

Jeff MacNellyJeff MacNelly Comics Legend
Michael Vance notes the passing of one of comic's greats. As a three-time winner of the Pulitzer prize, there is little doubt that Jeff's legacy will not soon be forgotten. As an editorial cartoonist and humorist, MacNelly entertained millions of comic readers daily with his Shoe comic strip and also as the illustrator for Dave Barry's syndicated column. Michael Vance has included in his article many of Jeff's books and additional biographical information.

Starland Screening - Family Man
Nicholas Cage stars as Jack Campbell, a Wall Street playboy at the top of his professional game - with little time for anything else. Jack’s lavish, fast-paced lifestyle drastically changes one snowy Christmas night when he unwittingly stumbles into the middle of a grocery store holdup and in a bold display of self-preservation disarms the gunman. The next morning he wakes up in a suburban New Jersey bedroom lying next to Kate (Tia Leoni), his college sweetheart who he left in order to pursue his career, and to the horrifying discovery that his former life no longer exists. As he stumbles through this alternate suburban universe, Jack begins to feel strangely comfortable in this new role of loving husband and father to two children. Jack finds himself at a crossroad, where he must choose between his high-powered career and the woman he loves. The movie is rated PG-13.

The Starland screening will be held Tuesday, November 28, 2000 at the UA Pavilion Theater on the 16th St. Mall at 7:30PM.

The drawing for the screening passes has been completed. Winners are being notified via email.

ShrekAnimation Mania
Well, like a lot of people, I made the trek to see The Grinch last night. It was good, but the real news came before the movie started. I got to see the trailers for Final Fantasy and Shrek - Wow! It seems the CGI talent that brought us a couple of ant movies and some toys have been working on the cutting edge and it's ready for the big screen.

Shrek is the story of a goblin that wants to be a good guy. The voice talent in this feature is impressive. Mike Myers plays the title role backed by Eddie Murphy, Cameron Dias and John Lithgow. Originally planned as an IMAX movie, it's been retooled for 35MM. Click here to view the trailer.

Final FantasyFinal Fantasy is the movie version of the video game. The preview for this feature was interesting. Rather than "realizing" animated animals and fairy-tale characters, Final Fantasy actually attempts to capture a cast of "human" 3-D animated characters.

From the visuals in the trailer, the current state of CGI isn't quite there yet. It's much easier to forgive a lack of texture on the skin of a talking animal than on a person. Shrek does attempt the same with the Cameron Dias character (she's a princess, I think), but she doesn't have to carry the film. My biggest problem is with talking CGI humans. So far, every one I've seen looks like a badly dubbed movie. Lip synching talking humans just seems to be beyond the current technology. At least somebody is trying. I must say that the visuals from the movie look awesome. Click here to view the trailer.

Bone: Old Man's CaveSuspended Animation
Michael Vance has given his highest recommendation to this week's comic - Bone: Old Man's Cave. He describes it as a mix of Lord Of The Rings and Pogo Possum. Mike says it's a winner by artfully combining layers of subplot, intriguing characters, believable dialog, perfect timing, and an eye for detail. You'll certainly want to check-out his review at this week's Suspended Animation.

Starland Screening
Arnold Schwarzenegger plays an adventurous helicopter pilot who becomes a victim of identity theft in his latest film, The 6th Day. The movie, set in the near future, explores the complex morality issues surrounding today's clone technology and its possible ramifications... and it has lots of the cool action and adventure you'd expect from a Arnold movie!

Suspended Animation
Mark Allen goes to battle against what he considers just a few too many Manga-style ancient Mayan wrestlers gathering for a big fight. His issue is a lack of good characterization.
