The NevermenThe Nevermen
Mark Allen isn't a real fan of this series. He lists its primary problems stemming from the title heroes themselves - they all look the same. Can you imagine all of the X-Men wearing the same masks and outfits? That's what the crime-fighters in The Nevermen always do. Guy Davis' art is the jewel in this setting, however. His dark and somewhat-sketchy style lends a very menacing atmosphere to the cityscapes and villains.

Starfest 2001 LogoMy God It's Full Of Stars!
As you can see, we've continued our tradition of ripping-off recognizable logos. The inspiration for this classic design hails from the 1968 movie and seemed to be a natural choice for this year's show. You can be sure the entire odyssey theme will be prevalent in many of the special activities we are planning for Starfest.

We'll be getting ready to print the convention t-shirts soon. You can order one now to slap on your back before the convention in April. There are two big advantages to ordering your t-shirt early: First you don't have to worry about us running out of your size and second you'll save money (they cost more at the convention). We'll be printing the shirts around the first of March and if you pre-order one you'll be able to pick it up at the convention or get it in advance. Order yours today!

Suspended Animation Review - Bosom Enemies
From the master who created Stinz, comes this comic series about two men that find themselves transformed into human-horses. The series is a device to deliver a essay on slavery inspired by Albrect Durer's woodcuts and Sebastian Brant's 1494 work, Ship of Fools.

Virginia HeyAlien Priestess Blesses Starfest 2001!
Virginia Hey, who plays Pa'u Zotoh Zhaan on the Sci-Fi channel series Farscape, has joined the guest list for Starfest, April 20-22, 2001 in Denver. As an actress, Hey has appeared in numerous TV series including: Roar, Flipper, Mission Impossible, and Dolphin Cove. In Australia and the UK she also appeared in Flesh and Blood, E Street and Pacific Drive

She made her film debut as the Warrior Woman in George Miller's Mad Max 2: Road Warrior opposite Mel Gibson. Her other film roles include The Living Daylights, Castaway, Mussolini, Return of Captain Invincible, Norman Loves Rose, and most recently Signal One. Her television movie roles include the genre film Timeslip for HBO.

It is fortuitous that her schedule has allowed her to come to Denver. We look forward to finding out what it's like playing a 812 year old 10th-level Pa'u (a priest) that was imprisoned for murder, is a plant-evolved being, and is responsible for the health and well-being of her fellow passengers aboard a living ship on Farscape.

Click here to see a close-up of the new Spiderman Costume!Spider-Man Revealed!
This is the first released picture of the costume which Tobey Maguire wears as Spider-Man. The costume was in design and development for six months, according to Spider-Man costume designer James Acheson, who has won Academy Awards for Restoration, Dangerous Liaisons and The Last Emperor.

"It is based on tension, and is one piece - all the way from the boots to the top of the head," says Acheson. "The boots have actually been built into the suit."

Acheson also revealed tidbits about the helmet, which contains lenses by Oakley. Also of note, the suit is printed with a computer-generated rectangular pattern in order to create an illusion of dimensionality - an almost 3-D effect. There are over 120 individual silk screens on the suit, for shading and highlighting. The suit's web has been molded in latex and dyed, but the actual design has been cut by computerized cutters. Teams of gluers and painters hand-glued the web onto the compressed suit and hand-painted the web with various metallic finishes.

Spider-Man is being readied for a May 3, 2002 release.

The Hanged ManThe Hanged Man
In today's Suspended Animation Comics Review, Mark Allen recommends The Hanging Man. It's the story of a condemned man that finds a chance to pay for his sins and redeem his wasted life by becoming a hero.

Kevin Sorbo as Dylan HuntKevin Sorbo Confirmed For Starfest 2001
It's taken considerable effort, one might say of Herculean proportions, to get things confirmed, but we are now proud to announce that Mr. Kevin Sorbo has joined our convention guest list and will be appearing at Starfest 2001. Kevin will be bringing his wife Sandra with him to Denver. Interestingly, they have acted together on both Hercules and Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda.

Aside from Kevin's job as Captain of the Andromeda, he also serves as the chairman for A World Fit For Kids!. It is a non-profit organization that provides gang, drug and drop out prevention programming to kids at risk. In his role as spokesperson, Sorbo raises awareness of the importance of mentoring and acting as a positive role model to the youth of our country. We will have a table in the Activities room, at the convention, where you'll be able to learn about the organization's programs and how you can help.

Sailor MoonScience Fiction Video Release Schedule
I've updated the release schedule for upcoming videos that will soon be available.
Click here to see the schedule...
I read an interesting set of questions in Video Store magazine, here are some of the better ones:

  • Why do studios keep saying a title is available on "video and DVD?" DVD is video.
  • Why does Blockbuster put "please rewind" stickers on DVD's?
  • Why are trailers for movies listed under "special features?"
  • Why do VHS cardboard sleeves have the open end on the bottom so they fall out?

Here's a list of my own:

  • Why doesn't the Sci-Fi channel re-run their original shows at night instead of infomercials?
  • Why aren't there any UPN stations on C-Band satellite?
  • Does anyone actually sit through all the ads at the beginning of a prerecorded movie?

What's yours? email me

Starland's SF-TV ScheduleScience Fiction TV Schedule
New episodes are listed for the following shows at our SF-TV listing page:
Andromeda, Angel, Buffy, Dark Angel, Earth Final Conflict, Farscape, Invisible Man, La Femme Nikita, Roswell, Star Trek Voyager, Stargate, and The X-Files. I really don't know how I'll have time to make it to the movies. Phil Watson, our resident videophile has already passed on two of our movie screenings. What is this world coming to? Sharon, you just have to get him that new Microsoft Ultimate TV unit when it comes out. I've heard it records 72 hours of video and allows two-channel simultaneous recording. That's got Phil's name all over it!

Safe HavenThe Safe Havens Yearbook
Bill Holbrook has created a public school that is its own world. Devoid of many of the evils that exist in the real world, Safe Haven's focuses on the gentle, whimsical side of life. Sometimes surrealistic, always entertaining, it's worth a peek.

Stone Trek - The StarsStone Trek - A Spacious Bedrock Of Laughs
Brian Matthews has given a space-lift to the Flintstones and Star Trek in this humorous marriage of the two 60's TV shows. Brian, together with some very talented friends, has successfully produced two parts of his first full-episode of the series. The whole concept has grown from a collection of illustrations Brian produced depicting the Star Trek cast as the stars of various other popular TV series.

I particularly like the production style of Stone Trek. It features a laugh track and goofy cartoon sound effects. Check it out yourself at http://www.stonetrek.com. The second episode is at http://www.angelfire.com/fl/sapringer/THEDEADLYEARS2.html and is mysteriously not linked to the main site.

O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Starland has a screening for this greatly-anticipated movie by my personal favorite comedy-film creators - The Coen Brothers. Ever since I laughed myself out of my seat in Raising Arizona, I became a great promoter of their odd-ball sense of humor. If you want a good warm-up before seeing the movie, be sure to check your local video store for any of the following titles:

The Big Lebowski, Fargo, Hudsucker Proxy, Barton Fink, Miller's Crossing, Raising Arizona, and Blood Simple. In researching this information, I discovered another film I'm going to be renting - the only one I haven't seen yet, Crimewave. Much thanks to The Internet Movie Database for this information!

The Starland screening will be held on Monday, January 8, 2001 at the United Artist Colorado Center Theater at 7:30PM. Entries for the screening have already been selected.

Willem DafoeMy Spidey Sense Is Tingling...
This photo was taken at the Spiderman press conference held today at Sony Studios. I will have a lot more information on this highly anticipated movie soon. Click on the photo for a close-up. Pictured in the larger photo are (from left to right) James Franco (Harry Osborn), Willem Dafoe (Green Goblin), Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man), Sam Raimi (director), and Kirsten Dunst (Mary Jane).

Encouraged by the recent success of comics-to-movie franchises, Sony hopes to score big with this modern fable about a boy who develops super powers from a spider bite. He then uses those talents to fight crime.

Peter Parker (Spider-Man) has always been portrayed as perhaps the most normal of comic superheroes. That alone should serve the story well in helping movie audiences relate to the title character. However, judging from the talent that has been assembled for this film, Sony is taking nothing for granted and wants to make sure that this film is only the first in a series.

Broom HildaSuspended Animation
Russell Myers has created a world mostly populated by animals: elephants, snakes, buzzards, ostriches, and one porcupine looking thing that walks and talks like a man. That world is presented in his comic Broom Hilda. Michael Vance fills-in the details and history of the strip in this week's column.

CrutchesWelcome To The New Year!
Some of you might have noticed the lack of updates. I'm going to blame ALL of it on my current medical state. I went into the beautiful Colorado mountains with my family after Christmas and broke my leg. It seems that I failed to best the snowmobile I was driving. It pinned me down and twisted my ankle around 180 degrees and broke the smaller of my two leg bones. I'll be attempting to get back into my routine over the next few days, please be patient and I think I'll have things, here at the website, back to normal by next week.

NikitaScience Fiction TV Schedule Update
While I might not be dancing any time too soon, KathE's bouncing off the walls about the new Nikita episodes that will be starting next week. Other series getting back into new shows include Farscape, Stargate, and The Invisible Man.
