Phillip's
Going ApeWe've known Phil Darlington for quite a while now. Back when he was in High School he starred in one of the Starcon Saturday Night plays. I remember him rehearsing in our back yard. Obviously, the thrill of the experience inspired him. Not only did Phil continued with his acting, but he moved to L.A. to pursue film roles! It was really exciting when we saw him onscreen in the movie Abyss, directed by James Cameron. In the course of events, Phil has returned from Hollywood and he's decided to go ape! He's planning to fulfill a life-long dream of having his own Planet of the Apes costume. Watch here at Starland.com as he goes through the transformation step-by-step. |
Robin Atkin
Downes Added To StarfestMr. Downes is best known for his crucial role as Byron the rogue telepath leader on Babylon 5. He landed the part after his stellar performance as Morann in the 4th season of B5 and in the movie “In the Beginning.” Robin was born and raised in the U.K. where he lived for 11 years. It was there he first encountered his love for acting while performing in boarding school at the age of six. He then moved to Los Angeles at the age of 12 and continued to learn the craft while appearing in many plays and taking drama courses in school. Downes earned a Master of Fine Arts degree at Temple University in Philadelphia while performing professionally. While in Philadelphia, he starred in numerous productions including leads in “Road,” “Assassins” and “Sign of the Lizard.” His work earned him many complimentary articles in the periodicals: American Theatre, Variety and the Philadelphia Inquirer, among others. After joining Actors Equity, Robin decided to pursue a career in television and film. He returned to Los Angeles in 1994 and has since appeared on Beverly Hills 90210, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Nash Bridges, Charmed, Angel, Titans and of course as Byron on Babylon 5. KathE and I are really happy he's joining the show, I'll bet Susan is too! |

Just
Visiting ScreeningAn American retelling of the 1993 French comedy blockbuster "Les Visiteurs," in which stars Jean Reno and Christian Clavier reprise their popular roles for original director Jean-Marie Gaubert. In the film, a French nobleman, Count Thibault of Malfete (JEAN RENO, right), and his servant André (CHRISTIAN CLAVIER, left) find themselves in modern-day Chicago, transported from the 12th century due to a wizard's flawed time-travel potion. Confused, lost, and overwhelmed, they meet Thibault's descendant Julia Malfete (CHRISTINA APPLEGATE) and her scheming fiancé, Hunter (MATTHEW ROSS). Thibault and André soon realize they must quickly find a way back to their own time … otherwise Julia and all of Thibault's lineage will never exist. With their timeless values of honor and courage, Thibault and André wreak hilarious havoc as they foil diabolical plots in both the 12th and 21st centuries. The Starland Screening will be held April
2, 2001 at 7:30PM at The Colorado Center Theater at I-25 & Colorado
Blvd. This is a Trivia Contest Screening. You'll have to answer some
questions in our trivia quiz to win tickets to the movie. |

Cary-Hiroyuki
Tagawa Added To Starfest 2001Mr. Tagawa got his first big break as an actor when he was cast in Bernardo Bertolucci's feature film The Last Emperor. He went on to roles in Rising Sun, Mortal Kombat, and The Phantom. He also starred in the series Nash Bridges on the CBS Television Network. Science Fiction fans will recognize him from his appearances on Babylon 5, Star Trek TNG, and his recurring role in Space Rangers. Tagawa, a U.S. Army brat, was born in Tokyo and lived in various cities while growing up. His father was in the army and was stationed at Ft. Bragg, N.C., Ft. Polk, La. and Ft. Hood, Texas. His mother's influence probably led him to acting, as she was an actress in Japan. The family finally settled in Southern California, where Tagawa began performing in high school. Later, he was able to live in Japan as an exchange student while studying at the University of Southern California. He has public speaking experience in addressing student groups at SFSU and Stanford. He has been coaching the martial artist portraying Shang Tsung in the Mortal Kombat Live Tour, and in his free time is developing a new form of Martial Arts called Chun Shin. Mr. Tagawa is one of the stars of Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes and will be at Starfest 2001 on Saturday, April 21st as part of a special presentation for the movie. |

It... Kinda Remember my pleading about sending letters to save the Voyager special - back on February 13? Well, we didn't change the network's mind about airing the show, but Paramount is going to save it for the DVD release of the series. Thank you everyone, mission accomplished! I've updated the science fiction TV
show schedules. Unfortunately, there are a lot of repeats coming
so it's slim-pickings for a while. The shows with new episodes on
the horizon are: Seven Days, Dark Angel, Farscape, Invisible Man,
and Voyager. The way the networks are staggering new episodes
makes it hard to predict when a new show is going to be on. Is
anyone reading these schedules? Let
me know. The newest flyer for Starfest 2001 is being mailed on Monday. We spend a lot of our advertising budget mailing flyers and postcards out every six months. If you are not getting one, let us know! If your address is wrong or you're getting more than one copy, let us know. If you know someone who wants to get them, but isn't, let us know. |
| Lots of
Star Trek Rumors I've been getting lots of reports on the new Star Trek TV series being developed at Paramount. Here are the top 5 rumors.
The confirmed reports I've heard are that they hope to film the 2-hour pilot and one episode before the writer's strike. |
The
Chicago Halloween ShowIt's been delayed, but I hope you'll like my photos and notes on the Halloween and Party Show I went to a couple of weeks ago. It's really too long to fit in the headlines, so please click here for the full story. The convention is the largest of its kind, covering all aspects of the Halloween business. It's impressive that the holiday is now second, only to Christmas, in sales and revenue. |
Michelle's
SiteMichelle is a Star Trek Voyager fan. She sent me notice that she'd posted some pictures she took at a couple of the conventions on her new website. I like that! If anybody else would like to have their site featured here, (and get noticed) feel free to email your web address and a little about your pages to me and I'll try to get you some traffic. Gwen
DeMarco Added To Starfest 2001Ms. DeMarco is the real-life actress, portrayed by Sigourney Weaver in the Galaxy Quest movie. She starred in the Maritime Television Network series during its entire two-year syndication run. Because the Galaxy Quest TV series was only carried on a few dozen TV stations across North America, it failed to gain wide recognition until the 1999 movie (based on the series' stars) was released. The show, produced in Halifax, Nova Scotia, featured the adventures of the intrepid crew of the NSEA Protector. Gwen, who played Lt. Tawny Madison, the dynamic blonde Communications Officer, proved to be Galaxy Quest's 7 of 9. In 1981, she was nominated for a Syndie award for her performance in the episode, Tawny, Tawny, We Hardly Knew Ye. For more info on Gwen and the other Starfest 2001 guests, click here... |
Planet
of the Apes is planning a rather large exhibit at Starfest and will
have some great materials to give away to everyone.
We've posted new additions and changes to the Starfest 2001 Activities and Room Schedules. The flyer for Starfest is going to print today and will be mailed shortly. It will be available at most comic stores, King Soopers and Cheapo Discs soon - along with the tickets for the show.
We first met John at a Bay Area Star Trek convention in the 80's. John was the manager of the Comics and Comics store chain at that time and promoted his stores at those shows. After leaving Comics and Comics, John became a convention gypsy and, for a short time, even had a home in Colorado. It was always pleasant to meet-up with John at conventions around the World and borrow things from each other that we'd forgotten to bring, like tape, bags and carts. Before and after the shows we'd sometimes sightsee together and almost always eat dinner each night. John was such an easy-going guy, that it was hard to take him seriously when he rarely attempted to get angry. Recently, John had been bringing his son to the Denver shows to help him behind the table (his son lives in Colorado Springs). Come to think of it, his son was even at some of those early shows in San Francisco. John's brand of positive attitude and kindness was rare, we'll miss him a lot. Unfortunately, John's passing was proceeded earlier this year by another Starfest/Starcon dealer, Frank Wooding. Frank, along with his daughters, grandchildren, and mother have been coming to the shows for several years. Frank was about the only dealer I knew that took good care of himself. With his large, body-builder physique, you'd think he would be aggressive, not Frank! He was always a soft-spoken man who loved his kids and always wore a big smile. |
Starfest
2001 TV CommercialI don't have the ad schedule yet, so I can't really tell you when this will air, but it will be on a lot. I've uploaded two different sizes of the video here. You will need a Quicktime reader to view them.

Dixie
Road Comic ReviewMichael Vance thinks he's on to something. "An intriguing graphic novel... written by a Belgian and drawn by a Frenchman!" "If that isn’t surprise enough, Dixie Road is extremely well-written and drawn by these non-Southern gentlemen."

I just uploaded the Horror Room schedule and reformatted the schedules for The Aspen Theater, Demo and Frisco Rooms. We still have a lot of programming to finalize before the show. I've been getting lots of goodies from the studios already to give away at the show. To see the current room schedule, click here. Dennis and I just finished the TV spot that I'll be running up to Cheyenne for the Satellite uplink tomorrow. It will be shown on the Dish Network premiere of Farscape Friday. If you can't wait, we'll probably have a copy of it here for you in the next day or two. I just added the Christy Golden bibliography to our Starfest 2001 guest list. Sorry, I didn't get the pictures from Chicago up yet, I promise I'll get it done tomorrow, for sure! I need to hook-up the new computer to replace this old dog. Now I'll be able to get behind in my work even faster! |

I just got back from the Halloween & Party Convention in Chicago where I shot some pictures of the new Planet of the Apes and Harry Potter costumes you'll be seeing this year. I'll try to post them tomorrow. Today - I have to attempt to produce the Starfest commercial for in time for the Farscape premiere on Friday. I've updated the Activities listing for the convention. There is now a tentative schedule (thanks to Susan Anderson) for the panels at the show. Christie Golden's bio will be updated tomorrow. She's told me that she'll be at the show both Saturday and Sunday. |

Great Starfest 2001 Activities AnnouncedSusan Anderson has been working very hard coordinating all the special events and activities at the convention. The list has been greatly expanded and is available now at our convention website.
