Most people didn't know that Starfest 2001 was Kevin Sorbo's second Denver appearance. His first address to the convention was via a short clip for his movie Kull the Conqueror. In the 1997 video message he said he was sorry he was not able to be at the convention in person. On April 21, 2001, however, he rectified that regret by gracing the stage in person. Greeted by thundering applause and cheers, Kevin proceeded to mesmerize the standing-room-only audience with an hour of personal attention. Click here to see and read the Post Convention Report... |
Chase
ToplessI got lazy this year and didn't do an auction. Boy was that a mistake! Taking Kevin Sorbo's lead from the day before, The Ferrengi Family pulled all the stops out during their Q&A on Sunday. With Lolita Fatjo and Cecily Adams whipping the crowd into a frenzy, Chase enticed one of our own staff members into placing the high bid on her gold bikini top. The staff member (we'll call him Ed) relished in his victory and obviously was delighted taking it off a very embarrassed Chase in front of the large, cheering audience. Did I mention? He paid $1000.00 for the privilege. Click here to see and read the Post Convention Report... |

Friends, Great TimesOne of the best parts of the convention is meeting with your friends and getting to know new ones. This picture is from Jana, who came all the way from Germany to see Kevin Sorbo at Starfest 2001. She just sent us this picture she had taken at the convention, on the left is KathE, Jana is in the middle, and Gayle Watson is to her right. Unfortunately, we need your help to identify the other two ladies in the shot. I'd love to get more pictures from the show, just send them with your story and you might see them here! |
Planet
of the ApesStarfest 2001 featured a special presentation of props and headpieces from Tim Burton's upcoming movie Planet of the Apes. The display was one of the highlights at the show. I've cropped and sized a whole bunch of shots from the display Click here to see the convention report as it develops... |

Brave
Old World ReviewWhile Michael Vance admits that there are a lot of time-travel comics out there, he considers Brave Old World to be one of the best. The DC title appeared in a four-issues series and comes recommended for mature readers in today's Suspended Animation Review.

Starfest Day
2I'm really sorry, but I'm going to make it brief tonight. My physical batteries are running down and I'd like to get these pictures up before I pass-out. I'll do a more thorough write-up on the show this week, after I've had some sleep. Click here

It's
Showtime!Starfest begins today. A lot of the work setting-up the show is long underway. Many of the Exhibitors at Starfest will have arrived by today and will be busy getting the displays and presentations ready for the convention. Twentieth Century Fox is going all-out with an incredible presentation booth on the new Planet of the Apes movie. The convention officially doesn't open until 6pm, but you can bet that many of the over 100 staff members will be at the DIA Convention Center getting things ready for you. If you arrive after 4pm, I'm sure Treecy's registration staff will already be busy getting everyone registered and checked into the show. Convention day in the hotel lobby is a great opportunity to start checking-out the other attendees. There are lots of impromptu card games and fan-topic discussions well under way before the first convention packages are handed out. Lots of people like to take advantage of early check-in on Friday to plan their weekend. It's a great way to hit the ground running when the bell rings at 6pm. Friday membership is included with all tickets. |

Venue For Ferengi FestThe demand for tickets to the Saturday night Ferengi Family Hour performance has been brisk. The original, live presentation has been in rehearsal for the last few weeks in LA. Due to the sound, lighting and staging requirements of the play, its venue has been moved to the Starfest Main Events Stage. The room will be redressed for the performance and only the center seating section will be used. Owing to the additional seating available, $10.00 general admission seats will now be available at registration as well as $20.00 reserved seats. Because of the all-new sound system shipped-in from Los Angeles for the Main Events Room, the quality of the experience should be first-class. If you already have a ticket for the performance, you need to trade it in for a new one. The stage is now wider than in the previous venue. |
A
Little About Lolita...Lolita Fatjo began working on Star Trek at the beginning of the second season of "The Next Generation" in the writing department. She had the good fortune of working with Gene Roddenberry as well as being the Assistant to the Executive Producer. She was promoted to Script Coordinator/Pre-Production Coordinator at the end of season 5 of TNG and the 1st season of DS9. Lolita held this position on both shows then continued with Voyager for 6 seasons. She also held the same job on "Generations" and "First Contact". She created a Writer's Workshop with Brannon Braga, Ronald D. Moore and Eric Stillwell which they taught all over the world. Now she manages actors for Star Trek conventions, appears at conventions all over the world and has co-written the Ferengi Family Hour which she stars in with Max Grodenchik, Cecily Adams, Aron Eisenberg and Chase Masterson. Lolita says her life was forever changed 14 years ago when she began working on Star Trek and doing conventions For more information about Starfest 2001 and all the other guests, click here. |

Horror
Room Schedule ChangeThe closing film for the convention Horror Room has changed to The Young Frankenstein 25th Anniversary Special. I guess we'll save the Tom Savini Documentary for a future convention... perhaps we'll get him to introduce it. Anyway, KathE is furiously putting the final touches on the entire Convention Schedule (specifically the Main Events Room) and I'll post it here as soon as she is done. Program
Book At The PrinterYou know, we get real excited when the program book finally goes to the printers. We're happy that it's done, but sad about all the typos and things we forget to get in. We inevitably make mistakes, due to the fact that we try to slam the whole thing together at the last possible moment. One year we actually got it done a week early - only to have half the stuff change before the show. We're still processing guest airline tickets (the changes continue, thank heavens for Fedex) and pickup arrangements. Sometimes we wish we could just go to the show and enjoy it like everyone else! |

Trailer
ParkGenerally, Dave and Jeff like to spring the contents of the Trailer Park on you. It's fun to surprise you - just like seeing the previews in a theatre. But since we twisted Jeff's arm a bit for you, we can certainly say that this year's presentation will include special reels or trailers on Tomb Raider, The Mummy Returns, Harry Potter, Disney's Atlantis and Pixar's Monsters, Inc., John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars, The Forsaken, Steven Spielberg's A.I. and an incredible 15 minute look at the upcoming full-length CGI animated Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. Seeing Dave and Jeff's Trailer Park is easy, it's usually scheduled right before one of our main guests each day in the Main Events room. For more Starfest 2001 information, Click Here. |

Ape At Starfest 2001Twentieth Century Fox is bringing a special Planet of the Apes presentation to Starfest. On display will be over 400 pounds of spears, flags, clubs, swords, pendants, tools, etc. - all selected by the movie's property master Russell Bobbitt, who will man the booth to answer questions from fans. Also in the presentation will be five ape masks, selected by Cinovation's (Rick Baker's effects shop) Bart Mixon, who also will be at the booth ready to talk to Phil Darlington about his own Ape Project and any that you may be planning. If that wasn't enough, the studio will also be handing out coins from Ape City, new Planet of the Apes posters, trading cards, and special jumbo-sized collectors cards. There are two Topps trading cards that will be given away from the movie. One features the Thade character from the movie and the other was specially produced for SF conventions - a jumbo-sized card styled on the "battle" one-sheet art. There will also be an presentation in the Main Events room with actor Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, who plays Krull in the Apes movie. Cary is well known for his work in such films as Mortal Kombat, and Rising Sun. He also stars in the upcoming blockbuster, Pearl Harbor. He will discuss his role in Planet of the Apes, and field questions from the audience. During the Apes presentation you'll also get to see a special Sci-Fi Reel that includes exclusive behind-the-scenes footage from the movie! |
Starfest
Book Drive & SaleSupport literacy and make room on your bookshelves from some new guilty pleasures! Once again, the Starfest staff will be hosting a book sale in the Activities Room. The last time we held a book drive we were able to donate $1000.00 to the Delta County Public Library, a sorely under funded institution serving the Western Slope of Colorado with many branches and adult literacy programs. Your generous purchases and contributions put many new book on the shelves! You can help at this convention by bringing your used paperback and hardback books to the specially marked table in the Activities Room at any time during the weekend. Even more important -- browse through our selection of "previously-appreciated" and "well-loved" books and take home some fabulous values while supporting this excellent cause. Please Note: 2 VERY SPECIAL signed 1st Edition hardbacks from George R.R. Martin and Raymond Feist will be up for auction at the Book Sale table! |

ForsakenStarland Screening Driving cross-country to deliver a vintage Mercedes, Sean (Kerr Smith) does the one thing he wasn’t supposed to do—pick up a hitchhiker. From that moment on, his road trip is transformed into a surreal and terrifying nightmare. Sean's new companion, Nick (Brendan Fehr), is not the laid back, aimless traveler he seems to be. He is a hunter. And his prey are a roving band of forsaken youths who feed upon hapless victims found in the dead of night—in a word, vampires. When Sean and Nick pick up the dazed and frightened Megan (Izabella Miko), whom the killers had left for dead, she becomes a human lure for the vampires. The stakes are raised when Sean himself is infected. The only cure for them all is to kill the host organism, Kit (Johnathon Schaech), the vicious leader. It's a deadly race against time to escape the fate of their enemies — joining the ranks of the insatiable undead forever. The movie is rated R. Click here to play our quiz and win free tickets. We have screenings in Denver and Salt Lake City on Thursday, April 26, 2001. |
