Far From Heaven Screening
Julianne Moore, Dennis Quaid and Dennis Haysbert
Far from Heaven marks the second teaming of leading lady Julianne Moore with writer/director Todd Haynes and producer Christine Vachon, following the trio’s collaboration on the acclaimed 1995 drama SAFE. At the 2002 Venice International Film Festival, Far from Heaven was honored with the Coppa Volpi Award for Best Actress (Julianne Moore) and the Individual Contribution Award (given to cinematographer Edward Lachman).

Far from Heaven tells the story of a privileged housewife in 1950s America, and is inspired by the great Hollywood dramas of that era. Haynes lovingly depicts the gorgeous and placid surfaces of mid-century suburban family life, even as his story breaks them open to reveal a repressed world of limitless emotions and life-shattering desires that cross the boundaries of racial and sexual tolerance with tragic results.

It is the fall of 1957. The Whitakers, the very picture of a suburban family, make their home in Hartford, Connecticut. Their daily existences are characterized by carefully observed family etiquette, social events, and an overall desire to keep up with the Joneses. Cathy Whitaker (Julianne Moore) is the homemaker, wife and mother. Frank Whitaker (Dennis Quaid) is the breadwinner, husband and father. They have two pre-teen children, a boy and a girl. As the story unfolds before us, Cathy’s pristine world is transformed. Her interactions with her gardener, Raymond Deagan (Dennis Haysbert); her best friend, Eleanor Fine (Patricia Clarkson); and her maid, Sybil (Viola Davis), reflect the upheavals in her life. Cathy is faced with choices that spur gossip within the community and change several lives forever.

This movie is rated PG-13. Click here to play our online quiz for tickets to the movie.

Suspended Animation Review
Some called him a hack, many called him brilliant
Jack Kirby was the essence of jump-in-your-face comic books, the most widely imitated and influential superhero artist, and the most prolifically creative man in the history of the art form.
A short list of his accomplishments must include the co-creation of Captain America, the launching of romance comics, his dynamic storytelling style, and the creation or co-creation of most of the characters published by Marvel Comics.

Highly-anticipated Movie from producer Brian Glazer
The people of Detroit know 8 Mile as the city limit, a border, a boundary. It is also a psychological dividing line that separates Jimmy Smith Jr. (Eminem) from where and who he wants to be. 8 Mile is a provocative fictional examination of a critical week in Jimmy's life, starring multi-platinum recording artist Eminem in his first leading role in a feature film, along with Kim Basinger as Jimmy's mother, Mekhi Phifer, Brittany Murphy and Eugene Byrd. This movie is rated R.

Your DVD Is Expired
Aren't you just dying to see that message on your TV?
Kurt Indvik over at Video Store Magazine is reporting that Flexplay Technologies is looking to market a DVD that expires. The technology is up and running and a few trial disks have already been made.

Where's the market for this thing? Remember the Divix DVD format that Best Buy was pushing? Remember the old RCA laserdiscs that wore out like a LP record? What makes DVDs so great is that they last so much longer than VHS tapes and look better. Video rental stores are a great source for used DVDs - but not if they have an expiration date on them.

Frankly, I'm nervous about movie studios releasing freshness dated software. Imagine a Futures Market on DVD titles - where the value of the disk goes down as the expiration date approaches; I'll bet it won't be long before you'll be getting junk emails offering to sell you a DVD player that can play disks well beyond their expiration date.

ATTENTION HOLLYWOOD: Don't mess with my video format unless you can improve it! I've got way too many Laserdiscs, Beta tapes, Vinyl Records, Cassette Tapes, Eight Track tapes, reel-to-reel tapes, 16MM films, 8MM films, and VHS-C tapes already cluttering-up my house. Please don't give me another format to collect stuff in. I can't take it anymore!... er, unless you can start making holographic videos - that format will probably relegate my DVD collection to the garage.

Not one, not two, but three reviews this week!
Batting-up first, Mark Allen recommends Trenches as a "Homerun" comic book. On deck is Michael Vance with a review of the pictured comic, Dungeon written by Lewis Trondeim and drawn by Joann Star. Batting clean-up is, wait... there is no clean-up, Michael bats again with a Miniview on The Stuff of Dreams, a nihilistic, hedonistic homage to comics' cats Krazy and Felix.

Suspended Animation Double Review Week
(Since I missed last week's issue due to a lack of sleep)
#1 Atmospherics, a graphic novel by writer Warren Ellis, and artist Ken Meyer, Jr.Now, this is not your typical alien-abduction story.  Thanks to Ellis, it actually manages to pose a decent mystery, keeping the reader guessing right to the end.

#2 Robin Hood and the Minstrel is a self-contained tale about Allan-a-dale. He's a "humble minstrel" who has lost the most important thing in his life; his true love.  His fair Ellen, to whom his whole heart belongs, has been promised to wed her father's less-kind, and much less-youthful, overlord Sir Stephen of Trent.

Suspended Animation Comic Reviews
Justice League: A New Beginning

In the world of comics, there are those works that, since their inception, have been considered classics.  One of those, a personal favorite of many older fans, yet surprisingly, unread by many, is D.C.'s late-'80's incarnation of the Justice League; and believe me, these aren't your father's Superfriends. Read the complete review by Mark Allen - click here.
