Bringing Down The House Screening Contest
Screening Monday, March 3, 2003 in Denver

Peter Sanderson (Steve Martin) is a divorced, straight-laced, uptight attorney who still loves his ex-wife (Jean Smart) and can’t figure out what he did wrong to make her leave him. However, Peter’s trying to move on, and he’s smitten with a brainy, bombshell barrister he’s been chatting with on-line. However, when she comes to his house for their first face to face, she isn’t refined, isn’t Ivy League, and isn’t even a lawyer. Instead, it’s Charlene (Queen Latifah), a prison escapee who’s proclaiming her innocence and wants Peter to help clear her name. But Peter wants nothing to do with her, prompting the loud and shocking Charlene to turn Peter’s perfectly ordered life upside down, jeopardizing his effort to get back with his wife and woo a billion dollar client (Joan Plowright). In the end, our unlikely pair has the chance to put each other’s lives on higher ground…if they don’t end up bringing down the house.

Michael Rosenbaum Coming To Starfest
Smallville's good bad-guy coming to Denver

Michael's website says he's played everything from a transvestite to a crazed fraternity boy, but the reason he's coming to Starfest is because of his excellent portrayal on Smallville as Alexander "Lex" Luther.

Initially, Smallville was dismissed by some as yet another in a long series of shows based on the Superman legend. To everyone's surprise, Smallville has not only earned critical praise, but great ratings. Everyone who knows the Superman story, knows that Lex has to turn bad, but the show's writers - helped by Michael's performance, have made him into much more than a one-dimensional comic book character. Lex is a young man trying to balance his natural ambitions against his desire to become a good person. Complicating that task is the overbearing influence of his evil do-anything-to-succeed tycoon father. The show may be about Superman's childhood, but the truly interesting and unique storyline is about Lex Luther. Watching the show develop, one is mesmerized by the metamorphosis of Lex's psyche and the anticipation of what events will push him over the edge and into the heart of darkness.

Michael Rosenbaum's film credits include: Bringing Down the House, Poolhall Junkies, Sorority Boys, Rave Macbeth, Sweet November, Eddie Eyeball, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, Urban Legend, 1999, The Day I Ran Into All My Ex-Boyfriends, and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. His TV work includes: Justice League, Smallville, The Zeta Project, Zoe, Duncan, Jack & Jane, and The Tom Show.

Mr. Rosenbaum will be appearing onstage at Starfest on Saturday, April 26th, 2003.

What's Happening At UPN?
The mini-network is slipping fast in the ratings
T
he ratings slide for UPN continues to perplex us. Enterprise is now pulling less viewers than The Dead Zone (a cable show). What gives? We've compiled some of the reasons they seem headed for failure.
  • They can't decide what kind of network they want to be.
  • The "Big Guns" Enterprise and Smackdown! just keep losing viewers.
  • They bought Buffy for a fortune - only to cut it loose after one season.
  • Too many "Urban" comedy shows.
  • Too much wrestling - not much drama.
  • Owned by CBS - not likely to get the best shows.

Just for fun, why don't you vote for your favorite solution to "save" UPN. We'll post the results next week.

Which of the following strategies would be best for UPN?

Become the "Reality" Network
Show a test pattern
Go all fantasy/science fiction

Suspended Animation
Michael Vance recommends - three fingers
Life is brutal on the mean streets of Toon Town located just on the wrong side of the tracks in Hollywood, California. If you don't believe that, just ask Rickey Rat, Carhorn Arm-whistle, Portly Pig or Dapper Duck. Sure,  Dizzy Walters came up the hard way too, but that doesn't excuse...

Suspended Animation Reviews
The Wandering Ones: Ghost Wind & Road To Perdition
Mark Allen does double-duty on this week's reviews, taking a look at two comics of completely different origins. The Wandering Ones: Ghost Wind is a web comic - the first that Mark's reviewed, and Mark notes that it's refreshingly not a copy of other comics he's read before. Road To Perdition is a reprint of the earlier work that inspired the Tom Hanks movie. Mark really likes Perdition and says, "Road to Perdition is done the way I wish ALL comics were done."
