The Princess Bride Screening Quiz/Contest
Screening Tuesday, August 2, 2005 at the Red Rocks Amphitheater - Doors open at 6pm.
A kindly grandfather sits down with his grandson and reads him a bedtime story. The story is one that has been passed down through from father to son for generations. As the grandfather reads the story, the action comes alive. The story is a classic tale of love and adventure as the beautiful Buttercup is kidnapped and held against her will in order to marry the odious Prince Humperdinck, and Westley (her childhood beau, now returned as the Dread Pirate Roberts) attempts to save her. On the way he meets an accomplished swordsman and a huge, super strong giant, both of whom become his companions in his quest. They meet a few bad guys along the way to rescue Buttercup. The film is rated PG.

Pre-show entertainment will feature music by Trampolines.

This screening is part of the Film on the Rocks series, pre-film entertainment on the Main Stage will be Chris Daniels and on the Twist & Shout Stage you'll see Strange Condition. If you don't win tickets, they are also available in all King Soopers stores, by phone at 1-866-464-2626 or online.

James Doohan Beams Up

I feel the need to say something about Jimmy, who died July 20th in his home in Redmond Washington.

I miss Jimmy. He was a frequent guest on the convention circuit in the 80's when I had the opportunity to get to know him as a fellow Star Trek traveler. He enjoyed a good joke and certainly wasn't a wall flower. He could occasionally be gruff, but that's how you knew he wasn't telling you what you wanted to hear. If you bothered him - he let you know... but that wasn't too often.

Jimmy would talk at length with fans in a restaurant and share surprisingly intimate stories with people he had just met. I got the impression, more so as his memories started to fade (Jimmy suffered from Alzheimer's), that he found comfort and solace with those unfamiliar fan faces that he knew could be counted as friends when even those close to him became less recognizable.

Rest in peace Scotty, er Jimmy, we'll miss you much.

Malibu, California - Present day. A smart, precocious and beautiful teenager named Katie (Mika Boorem) celebrates her birthday with her family and friends. Her father, Steven (Beau Bridges), and mother, Bridgett (Linda Hamilton), have provided Katie with a lot of love and understanding, as well as a privileged life and all that a material world has to offer. Halfway around world in rural China, another teenage girl, Lin (Yi Ding), celebrates her birthday on the exact same day, but her reality exists in stark contrast to Katie's. Rescued as an infant, Lin has a severe facial deformity that prevents her from the freedom of ever showing her face. Her adoptive father, Daniel (Luoyong Wang), has sacrificed everything in his life in order to protect his beloved child. They live with the bare essentials, in darkness and absolute simplicity. But they are bonded with incredible love and closeness. His only hope is that one day Lin can emerge from her self-imposed isolation to live in the world without fear and shame. On his way home from work one day, Daniel sees a flyer that alerts him to a special medical program that provides reconstructive surgery to children in countries who cannot otherwise afford it. It's called "Doctor's Gift" (based on "Operation Smile"). Although she's reluctant at first, Lin agrees to accompany her father to a clinic in Shanghai. However, due to a series of unfortunate events, Daniel is unable to get Lin to the clinic in time, and they miss out on the chance for surgery.
