Costume Contest

The Costume Contest will be held Saturday night right after the Play Parody. Be sure to register with Debbie Barbich in the Activities room if you wish to participate. Our costume contest is not just about costumes. Our judges weigh their decisions heavily on entertainment and fun. If you have a novel idea for a presentation that you think will blow-away the audience with its humor and/or excitement, you'll really increase your chances of winning.

Rules

You must sign the StarCon/StarFest Photographic Release before you will be allowed to enter the Costume Contest. It allows us to use your costume picture and likeness in photographs or video for our promotional use.

There is a limit of 75 entrants.

1.    All costumes must be ORIGINAL. If you bought or rented your costume as one-unit (i.e. a Batman costume as opposed to purchasing your tights here, your cape there, and your leotard somewhere else and customizing it to fit your character) points cannot be given for anything except presentation.

2.    All winning: Costumes must be retired. They may be scavenged for parts, but refurbishing doesn't constitute a new costume.

3.    Dramatic presentations, speeches, and skits must be kept to 30 seconds without prior permission. In fact, a good rule of thumb would be to figure on 30 seconds per person on stage at the same time (although we would like to keep the upper limits at 3 minutes). There are exceptions to every rule, don't assume yours won't be allowed--ask--we are on your side. A. If you wish to use a cassette tape with your presentation, you must make sure we know about it when you register and we would like to take possession of it then. The tape must also be cued. (This means when you put the tape into the cassette player it will start almost immediately) B. You must let us know if you are going to use any props and/or special effects. Figure if you can't carry it on stage with you; it probably won't be allowed. If there is any question about what can and can't be done, you need to ask about it before the convention. We wouldn't want you to invest in equipment you can't use.

4.    We strongly urge you to have a costume that is somewhat comfortable to wear. Sometimes you have to wait quite a long time before your turn and we would hate to have you pass out before you were able to show off your creation. Be sensible; make your costume well ventilated. We will have some thread, pins and other sewing items available for last minute repairs.

5.    NO NUDITY! No Band-Aids stuck in strategic places, no loin cloths that show too much, no see through flimsy outfits that leave nothing to the imagination...if you feel you must flaunt it--do it in the privacy of your own home. All costumes will be viewed at the Costume Lineup. Because everyone has a different idea as to what constitutes a rather questionable outfit, the Costume Contest Staff will have the final say. What they say goes! You can be disqualified and asked to leave the convention. (This is actually handed down from the entire Convention Staff and constitutes official policy for the whole convention. Please be forewarned that KathE is very serious about this rule being enforced.)

6.    There will be a winner and runner up selected from each category, and Best of Show. The categories for this convention's costume contest are:

A.    Media Science Fiction -- Costumes inspired by TV, movies, live or animated.

B.    Fantasy/Literary -- Costumes inspired by a Sci-fi/fantasy book or characters (also Original characters)

C.    Masters -- For costumers having placed in three StarCon/StarFest Contests.

D.    Juniors -- For young costumers between 12-16 years of age.

E.    Children -- For young costumers 12 and under.

All categories are subject to cancellation if there are less than 4 contestants and will be combined with the next best suitable category. There are some costumes that are qualified for more than one category. Effort will be made to put them in the most appropriate category.

7.    Prizes will be awarded during and just following the Costume Contest. Best of Show $100, membership and trophy. All other places trophies, memberships, and goodies.

If you have any questions, just ask the staff at the Costume contest table. (Not that we can answer them, but you can ask.)
