Initially, Smallville was dismissed by some as yet another in a long series of shows based on the Superman legend. To everyone's surprise, Smallville has not only earned critical praise, but great ratings. Everyone who knows the Superman story, knows that Lex has to turn bad, but the show's writers - helped by Michael's performance, have made him into much more than a one-dimensional comic book character. Lex is a young man trying to balance his natural ambitions against his desire to become a good person. Complicating that task is the overbearing influence of his evil do-anything-to-succeed tycoon father. The show may be about Superman's childhood, but the truly interesting and unique storyline is about Lex Luther. Watching the show develop, one is mesmerized by the metamorphosis of Lex's psyche and the anticipation of what events will push him over the edge and into the heart of darkness.
